Qualifications for social security disability

California workers who are employees have payroll taxes automatically deducted from each paycheck. There are several types of taxes that all workers pay, including social security tax. This is often compared to insurance because if someone becomes disabled, they might be eligible for benefits from the government since they have paid taxes into the system. However, not everyone is eligible just because they've paid in and then become disabled.

SSD can be expedited under special circumstances

When people in California apply to the Social Security Administration for disability benefits, they usually expect a long wait. The agency, however, does have systems in place to process applications quickly if applicants meet certain criteria.

After workers’ comp, don’t forget about SSD

Modern medicine is a wonder. It can cure many ailments and repair many types of injuries that were unthinkable a generation ago. Sometimes recovery still doesn’t mean a return to full health. Some injuries and operations have long-term side effects. If it’s unlikely you’ll return to your job after an injury, it’s important to file for workers’ compensation first, to help you cover immediate expenses, but also to apply for Social Security Disability to meet your long-term needs.

Getting benefits after being paid under the table

If a California resident is paid under the table for services rendered, it may still be possible for that person and others to get disability payments. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is designed to help people who have been unable to work or work substantially over the past 12 months. Those who are paid in cash usually don't qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) because they don't pay payroll taxes.

Understanding disability benefits

The Social Security Administration defines a disabled person as someone who is unable to work due to an extreme condition that will last at least a year or until the individual dies. Many California residents may not be directly impacted by a disability. However, that does not mean that they will not become disabled by some unexpected event in the future. It is important that people understand as much as they can about Social Security disability benefits.
